Invite tenders immediately for the redevelopment of Russell Market in Shivajinagar: Maheshwar Rao.

 

Prepare a plan for developing a citizens’ waterway in stormwater drains of Ulsoor Lake.

Bengaluru, December 18:

Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao directed officials to immediately invite tenders for the redevelopment of Russell Market in Shivajinagar.

While inspecting various locations within the Shivajinagar Assembly Constituency under the Central City Corporation, he stated that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the redevelopment of Russell Market has already been completed and instructed officials to swiftly implement the project.

Russell Market is a heritage structure, and it should be redeveloped by giving it a modern touch while preserving its legacy, transforming it into a vibrant, sustainable, and people-friendly market for Bengaluru. He emphasized that traders should not face any inconvenience and instructed officials to make temporary alternative arrangements before commencing the redevelopment works.

During the market development works, proper drainage systems must be ensured, and suitable arrangements should be made to prevent water stagnation in parking areas. To keep the market clean at all times, a comprehensive waste segregation and composting system should be implemented.

He also instructed that all works, including fire safety systems, toilet facilities, granite flooring in public movement areas, clock tower design, and other related infrastructure, must be executed while maintaining high quality standards. In addition, a comprehensive plan should be prepared for the development of the surrounding areas of Russell Market.

Conduct Tax Drive:Officials were directed to revise property taxes in and around the Russell Market area and to conduct a tax drive to improve property tax collection by taking necessary measures.

Prepare a plan for the construction of a waterway:Ulsoor Lake receives water from three inlets. After inspecting these inlets, officials were instructed to prepare a plan to develop a civic waterway on the K-100 model. He also directed that the Ulsoor Lake development works be completed at the earliest.

Construction of a walking track for pedestrians and an RCC retaining wall at Ulsoor Lake is currently in progress. Works such as Kalyani redesign, island development, and desilting are yet to be undertaken. As public access around the lake is essential, officials were instructed to write to Defence Department authorities near Ulsoor Lake and take necessary steps to facilitate the construction of the walking track.

Shivajinagar Assembly Constituency MLA Rizwan Arshad stated that Russell Market is a very old heritage building and that redevelopment works are being carried out carefully without causing any damage to its structure. He assured full cooperation to ensure that no local issues arise during the redevelopment process.

He further stated that the redesigned Russell Market will prioritize ease of movement, visibility, and accessibility, and will be transformed into an attractive destination that is convenient for both vendors and customers.

Inspection of Hafizia School Building Construction Work: Construction of a G+3 building at Hafizia School is in progress and is expected to be completed by the end of January. Instructions were given to install fencing on the terrace of the third floor and to provide sports facilities for children. Facilities for shooting, badminton, basketball, and other sports should be developed, along with the construction of a walking track in the playground. As additional funds are required for these works, officials were instructed to take steps to sanction additional grants.

During the inspection, Additional Commissioner (Development) Daljit Kumar, Joint Commissioner Hemant Sharan, Chief Engineer Vijay Kumar Haridas, Executive Engineers, and other concerned officials were present.
