Preeti Gehlot, Special Commissioner of the Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Management, has announced that 63 out of the 183 lakes within the limits of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) have reached full capacity due to the significant rainfall over the past week.

The total storage capacity of the lakes within BBMP limits is 32,514 million litres. In April 2025, the overall water storage had declined to 10,595 million litres, with only 3 lakes filled to capacity. Around 63 lakes were nearing complete dryness at the time.

Following a week of steady rainfall in the city, the lakes have collectively stored approximately 26,056 million litres of water — a substantial increase compared to April 2025 levels. As a result, 63 lakes under BBMP limits are now completely filled.

Cleaning and maintenance activities are currently underway at the sluice gates and within the filled lakes. Personnel have been deployed to remove waste, including debris, plastic, and other refuse, from the lakes and associated Storm Water Drains to ensure proper flow and hygiene. YELAHANKA KERE.
