Project Walkaluru – 6th Footpath Walk in Yelahanka under North City Corporation limits receives widespread appreciation for its green, obstacle-free pedestrian pathways

The 6th Footpath Walk under Project Walkaluru was successfully conducted today in Yelahanka, jointly organised by The Ugly Indian, active citizen groups, and officials of the Bengaluru North City Corporation.

More than 100 people participated — including the Hon’ble MLA of Yelahanka Assembly Constituency, the Commissioner of Bengaluru North City Corporation, Joint Commissioners, corporation officers and staff, local residents, and pedestrian enthusiasts of all age groups from across the city. Participants actively walked 10 km entirely on footpaths.

The walk was flagged off by the Hon’ble MLA of Yelahanka Assembly Constituency, Sri R. Vishwanath, along with the Commissioner of Bengaluru North City Corporation, Sri Pommala Sunil Kumar, who also joined citizens in the walk. People from different age groups participated and assessed the quality of footpaths and the overall walking experience in the area.

Route details:The 10 km Footpath Walk started from Sheshadripuram College on Doddaballapur Main Road and proceeded through Radial 1st A Main Road, 16th B Cross, and Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Road.

Objective and observations:The main objective of the initiative was to enable citizens to walk without fear, obstruction, or inconvenience. It was also communicated that pedestrians can report obstacles by sharing photos or videos with the corporation, and corrective action would be taken promptly. A noteworthy aspect of today’s walk was that after every 1 km, participants were asked to record the number of obstacles encountered, which was widely appreciated.

Details of obstacles observed during today’s walk:

* Number of garbage dumping spots: 0
* Number of open urination spots: 0
* Broken or missing footpath slabs: 0
* Two-wheelers obstructing footpaths: 1
* Cars obstructing footpaths: 1
* Piles of construction materials blocking footpaths: 0
* Shops/vendors encroaching on footpaths: 0
* Encroachments: 1 (petrol bunk)
* Unauthorised flex banners/hoardings: 2
* BESCOM-related obstructions: 1

In total, only 6 major obstacles were found along the entire 10 km stretch. Notably, no black spots or open urination areas were identified. The footpaths were wide, clean, and highly walkable.

Officers and staff who participated in the walk recorded a few minor improvement points, and steps have already been initiated to address them.

A majority of participants rated the 10 km stretch as satisfactory.

The Commissioner, Sunil Kumar Pommala, appreciated the joint efforts of citizens, The Ugly Indian team, and corporation staff, stating that such collaborative initiatives contribute significantly towards greater public participation and building a cleaner Bengaluru.

Project Walkaluru Coordinator Arun Pai stated that effective and long-term results can be achieved when citizens and officials work together in coordination.
