Month-long drive to prioritise road repairs, pothole filling, sanitation and neighbourhood improvement
Inter-departmental teams to identify and resolve civic issues ward by ward, with a target to address as many problems as possible by November-end
Special focus on junction improvements, footpaths, streetlights, drainage infrastructure and removal of waste and debris
Bengaluru, October 28: The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) will launch the ’Ward One’ campaign across all five city corporations from November 01, with a month-long drive to address local civic issues, improve sanitation and undertake comprehensive neighbourhood development, Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda directed officials on Tuesday. Under the initiative, one ward will be selected from each division of the respective city corporations. Officials from all concerned departments will work together to identify the ward’s key civic problems and implement solutions, with the campaign commencing on November 1.
Chairing a meeting on sanitation and civic improvement works across the GBA jurisdiction, the Minister said recent rains had damaged roads in several parts of Bengaluru, making urgent repairs necessary. The campaign will bring together the GBA, the five city corporations and other government agencies to address these issues through coordinated, ward-level action.
Road repairs, sanitation and civic infrastructure to take centre stage
The campaign will prioritise repairs to roads and junctions, pothole filling, intensive cleaning and the removal of accumulated waste and debris. Other key works will include repairing footpath kerbstones and slabs, fixing manhole covers, restoring streetlights, and removing dry and potentially hazardous tree branches.
The initiative will also address civic infrastructure issues requiring coordination across departments, including the repair or relocation of BESCOM electricity poles and RMU units, preventing water leakage, and repairing or removing damaged water pipelines wherever necessary.
The objective is to resolve as many identified problems as possible by the end of November while improving the overall cleanliness, safety and appearance of the selected wards, the Minister said.
Junction improvements to help ease traffic congestion
Emphasising the importance of road and junction improvements, Krishna Byre Gowda directed officials to give special attention to repairing and upgrading junctions to help ease traffic congestion.
Improved road conditions and better-managed junctions can help reduce traffic bottlenecks and make daily commuting smoother for residents, he said.
Ward-Level Committees to coordinate inter-departmental action
To ensure effective implementation, committees comprising officials from the relevant departments will be formed at the divisional level across the five city corporations. These committees will coordinate civic works, monitor progress and develop a clear execution plan based on the time required to complete sanitation and infrastructure improvements in each selected ward.
The Minister stressed that the campaign must go beyond isolated cleaning drives and deliver coordinated improvements to neighbourhoods by bringing all relevant agencies together.
Ground-level survey and checklist to identify civic issues
Ward-level officials will be provided with a checklist to systematically assess sanitation and infrastructure deficiencies. Assistant Engineers, Junior Health Inspectors and marshals will inspect roads and public spaces, identify outstanding issues and map each problem to the department responsible for resolving it.
Based on these assessments, a prioritised action plan will be prepared and implemented in coordination with the concerned departments.
The Ward One campaign is intended to establish a focused, coordinated approach to civic maintenance and neighbourhood improvement, with clear identification of problems and planned action to address them.
The meeting was attended by Commissioners Ramesh D.S., Pommala Sunil Kumar, Ramesh K.N., G. Jagadeesh and Dr Rajendra K.V.; Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited CEO Karigowda; Additional Commissioners Lokhande Snehal Sudhakar and Mona Roth; Chief Engineers; and other officials
