Binay Jha, Director, Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) [SBM(U)]-2.O, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, visited the Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited office today and got comprehensive information about solid waste management in the city.
BSWML Chief Executive Officer Dr. K. Harish Kumar gave comprehensive information through a demonstration on how solid waste management is being done in BBMP limits, what steps are being taken and the plans formulated in the coming days.
Currently, 6,500 MT of waste is being generated in the city daily and wet, dry and sanitary waste are being collected separately through auto tippers from every house. He said that the auto tippers and compactors that collect garbage have been equipped with RFID and the marshals will take attendance daily through mobile technology.
The marshals will impose fines on those who throw garbage on the roadside in the city. During night patrols, they will catch those who throw garbage on the roadside, fine them and warn them not to throw garbage on the roadside again. He also said that they will create awareness about giving garbage to the auto tippers that collect garbage from house to house.
In addition, information was given about the construction of an integrated command control center to monitor solid waste management and the development of software to monitor garbage disposal.
Visit to Solid Waste Management Units:
Visit to the landfill and KCDC treatment units to get information about the activities being carried out within the limits of the BBMP regarding proper management of solid waste, one of the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
He observed the scientifically managed mixed waste disposal at the landfill and gave several suggestions. He suggested that more result-based information, education and communication should be carried out to the public to reduce the amount of mixed waste being disposed of at the landfill and to increase the percentage of waste segregation at the source.
Visit to the under-construction processing plant
He visited the processing plant being constructed with international technology by M. Mukka Proteins Limited at a private cost of approximately Rs. 150 crores and obtained information about the technology and operation.
Analyzing the need for a processing plant with an estimated capacity of 1000 MT in the treatment unit, Bangalore city expressed its happiness for the decision and venture of a private company in waste management at an international level, contributing to the city. If the proposal for building a large-capacity processing plant with international technology is submitted to the National Steering Committee of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan under the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the said M. Mukka Proteins Limited’s large-scale technology will be approved and mandatory adoption in other municipal corporations of the state and the country will be mandatory and guidelines will be issued. He instructed the concerned officials to take action to submit the proposal.
